Description of B&B:

The house is a beautiful Maison de Maitre in the centre of the lively market town of Barbezieux St Hilaire. It has been lovingly renovated to display the light and spacious rooms, whilst retaining all its period Charente features, including the main oak spiral staircase; many marble fire places; splendid oak and tiled flooring; panel doors; and highly decorative ceilings and lighting. As a practising Artist, the owner has a large collection of classical and contemporary art on show around the house The style of the house largely dates from the Napoleonic era, but parts of the cellars and foundations formed part of the defences of the Chateau in Medieval times, when the town was besieged by the Moors, and later by the English! All the guest rooms are ensuite.
You may also relax in the spacious salon and dine in the elegant dining room, which opens out onto the terraced garden. In the summer we enjoy dining out in the garden. The kitchen garden provides an excellent supply of fresh organic vegetables and herbs. All meals served are freshly prepared from local ingredients. There is also a games room in the attic with a pool table and bar.
WIFI is available throughout the house

Local attractions
Step outside the front door and you are on one of the main ways through the town, within easy walking distance of good shops, cafes and restaurants and the twice weekly street markets. There is plenty to see and do in the town – a cinema with two screens; outdoor swimming pool; tennis and other sports; exploring the ancient narrow streets, the Chateau and the church, plus various fetes and music festivals in season. Further afield, Charente is a beautiful area to explore. Barbezieux is surrounded by lush vineyards and fields of sunflowers, and the famous Charentaise melons. The name ‘Petite Champagne’ is used for the quality of the cognac produced in this area. Another very popular but less well known local drink is the Pineau de Charente, which makes an excellent summer aperitif well chilled. The coast at Royan and beyond is a pleasant day excursion; the historic towns of Cognac and Saintes, with Roman remains are a short drive away, plus the cities of Angouleme and Bordeaux, with its fabulous nineteenth century architectural exuberance..

Description of Gite:

The house is a beautiful mansion located in the center, near the market Barbezieux St Hilaire. It has been lovingly restored to enhance the brightness and size of parts while maintaining the nice Charentaises, including a spiral staircase in oak, and several marble fireplaces and a beautiful oak floors and tile, the doors, ceilings and very decorative lights. As an artist in business, the owner has a large collection of classical and contemporary works on display in the house. The style of the house dates for the majority of the Napoleonic era, but part of the cellar and foundations have made use of the tusks of the medieval castle of the time when the city was besieged by the Arabs and later by the English! All rooms have ensuites.

You can also relax in the lounge and dining in the elegant dining room which gives access to the garden terrace. During the summer we enjoyed our meals in the garden. The garden provided the kitchen of excellent vegetables and herbs. All meals are prepared with fresh local produce. A game room with pool table and bar is located in the attic. The wireless internet is available throughout the house. Local activities

Once you leave the house, you are top of the street leading to the city by walking, you can access the superb shops, cafes, restaurants and the market is held twice per week. Many things are in town to see a cinema with two screens, an outdoor pool, tennis and other sports. You can also explore the old streets, the castle and the church as well as various festivals and music festivals in season. If you go a little further, the Charente is a beautiful area to visit. Barbezieux is surrounded by beautiful vineyards and sunflower fields and the famous melons of Charente. The name 'Petite Champagne' is used to describe the quality of the brandy produced in the region. Another regional drink, but less known are: the Pineau de Charente, to serve chilled as an aperitif. The coast of Royan and its surroundings can be an excellent opportunity to tour for the day. A short drive you can visit the historic towns of Cognac and Saintes, where you will see the Roman features. In addition, the cities of Angouleme and Bordeaux are close with all the exuberance of 19th century architecture that implies.

compliment de séjour 5 out of 5 stars

Opinion by: Jean-Louis IMBERT, Nov 28 2010 9:10PM

Ravis de notre séjour, 5 out of 5 stars

Opinion by: croué hélène, Oct 9 2010 10:15AM

Barbezieux-Saint-Hilaire: "Lovely holiday" 5 out of 5 stars

Opinion by: Mr + Mrs. Eyre, Oct 8 2010 11:07AM

My husband and I stayed here for a week and had a lovely time. Even in mid-September the weather was still very Mediterrannean.
The house is very big and the rooms were all very impressive, with personal touches and luxurious furnishings nothing like your average b&b back home.
The couple who run it are a lovely English couple who were very friendly and welcoming. The breakfast was wonderful !
We ate in the beautiful dining room a couple of nights and the meals were excellent. There was also a pool table, darts and games in the attic!
It's a great region for cycling in the countryside and also cognac and pineau tasting!
A very relaxing holiday and proof that we don't need to travel halfway round the world to have a nice time!

une tres belle maison, un superbe accueil 5 out of 5 stars

Opinion by: Anne-Laure Chatelais, Nov 1 2009 12:07AM
