Set in beautifully scenic countryside in Carrazedo de Montenegro near the Padrela mountains, the Quinta d'Alagoa is spread over 70 hectares (about 170 acres) of farm and woodland. Chestnut, olive and vine are the main crops.

All produce is organically grown and certified by SOCERT, the Portuguese Organic Quality Control entity. Amidst fields and woods, the farm buildings of unusual historical and cultural value are an excellent example of rustic architecture.

The old farmhouse, labourers lodgings, barn and other outhouses have been restored and adapted for agrotourism. The farm is a member of TER (Turismo no Espaço Rural – Rural Tourism Association).

At the heart of this vast estate are the farm buildings. They have been proposed as Listed Buildings, in recognition of their historic and cultural value.

The Casa dos Moços, the Casa das Mulheres, the Coberto da Nora and the Casa do Caseiro - the seasonal labourers housing, are a good example of traditional rustic architecture and permit a glimpse into the daily life of the past.

The Lagar do Azeite and the Lagar do Vinho have been restored to working order, retaining their original components.
The Casa da Quinta has six double bedrooms all with en suite bathroom.
The stable has been adapted to become a meeting and reunion room for large groups.

Apart from its main crops of 3 hectares (about 7 acres) of vine, 16 hectares (about 40 acres) of olive and 23 hectares (about 57 acres) of chestnut, the Quinta D’Alagoa also grows vegetables, has orchards and 10 hectares (about 25 acres) of Lameiro (water meadows). There are oak, poplar and pine woods.
Organic farming was adopted throughout the farm in 2001 and is certified by SOCERT, the Portuguese Organic Quality Control entity.
No artificial chemicals are used in fertilization, neither are pesticides or herbicides used. The cattle consume only natural fodder.

Description for Gite

Learn about the organization of the traditional rural countryside, customs, agricultural system and way of life in Trás-Os-Montes. Discover lakes and ponds, fields and meadows, pine and oak woods and other species of plants, including herbs. Explore abandoned villages.

Within the boundaries of the farm there are nearly 15 kilometres of paths through fields, pastures and woods through which you may choose to walk, cycle (reservation needed) or ride (from next summer). They will take you through farmed land, grazing fields, chestnut groves, woods and forests.
The Quinta D’Alagoa suggests mountain bike outings, within and beyond the farm, visiting villages and national heritage monuments.
