La Maison de Bernadette. Eco Bed and Breakfast using local and organic produce. Provides copious and delicious plant based (vegan) breakfasts and meals. Large organic permaculture garden. Located in the heart of the French Pyrenees in the rural village of Artalens. A Bigourdane house with amazing views of the surrounding mountains.

Description for Gite

The Bedrooms
In this large 3 bedroom house you will have a comfortable guest room with en-suite. Guest room capacity is a MAXIMUM of 2 Adults
Each guest room has a large double bed (180cm) that can be separated into 2 singles. The en-suites have a shower, sink and eco toilet. We supply both organic cotton towels and organic vegan soap.

The Breakfast
Every morning between 8am and 10am a healthy, organic and energy packed plant based (vegan) breakfast is served in the large dining room. There is a choice of cereals, rice/almond milk, fresh fruit, biscots/bread, jams, homemade goodies, a selection of dried fruits, a choice of teas, coffee and fruit juice. Breakfast is included with your reservation. We can also prepare your evening meals and picnics (these meals need to reserved in advance and are at an extra cost).

The House
The house was built in the 1700s and is a large Bigourdane style mountain house that has been lovingly renovated. It is the perfect mix of old and new. The living room and dining room are both communal spaces and have spectacular views over the mountains and valleys. The living room is a wifi zone, has a self service bar and there are plenty of board games, books and films to choose from. An upstairs reading nook is the perfect place to hide away and read a book from the large selection we have in the house. The dining room has a traditional handmade Basque table, large Bigourdane open fireplace and is where the breakfast buffet can be found. The wifi access available onsite in the lounge area is free. For your own comfort we do not have wifi in the bedrooms.

The Barn
For all guests wanting to prepare their own meals or picnics there is a fully equipped kitchenette in the barn. The washing machine is available on request. For those wanting to use the barn heating in the winter a 10euro/night heating supplement, to contribute to the cost of wood is asked for.

Exterior Space;
The large garden that surrounds the house and barn is unfenced and pesticide free. This wonderful permaculture garden with it’s panoramic views of the mountains has lounging and eating areas for you to rest and relax. There is plenty of space for children to play and run around in. We have planted lots of fruit trees and grow our own organic vegetables. The garden is home to our friendly cat ‘Captain Bob’, our free ranging ducks and the local hedgehog.

There is ample private parking for guests.
Lockable equipment storage is available on request.

We are a friendly couple with a child of our own.
We live on site to answer any enquiries you may have.
We serve breakfast in the morning (8am-10am) and can prepare your picnic and dinner (at an extra cost).

NO Smoking inside the buildings. (That includes your bedroom!)
NO eating or drinking in the bedrooms: there are lots of areas in the downstairs of the barn, dining table in the main house and outdoor tables and chairs and lounge area should you wish to eat or drink somewhere.
NO pets allowed; due to family allergies.
Tourist taxes, to be paid in cash on arrival, are not included. Charged per person per night (+18yrs)
After heavy snowfall the access to house can be difficult. Having snow chains is a must.
Please be considerate of any other guests who might be staying in the other 2 guest rooms.
This is a plant based bed and breakfast which means we do not have any animal products available to eat (no milk, cheese, meat etc).
Mobile network is limited here. Orange and Free work the best. SFR does not work.

We are situated in the quiet rural mountain village of Artalens-Souin in the Pyrenees National Park. It over looks the Vallée des Gaves and is situated in the just 10 minutes from the Ski station of Hautacam.

The nearest town, Argeles-Gazost, is 10 minutes drive away. It has everything you might need such as supermarkets, farmers markets, cafés, bars, cinema, spa, banks, post office and bus station.

Attractions nearby: Hautacam Ski station (9.3km away), Thermal town of Argeles-Gazost (9.4km away), Pilgrimage town of Lourdes (17.9km away), Mountain town of Cauterets (23.8km away), Grand site Pont d’Espagne (32km away), UNESCO World Heritage site Gavarnie (42.9km away), Grand site Pic du Midi de Bigorre Observatory (48.3km away).

Nearby activities include: hiking on all levels, trail running, tree climbing parks, White water sports, fishing, mountain biking, road biking, rollerblading, running, tennis, swimming pool, Pyrenees animal park, mountain luge, Spas, 6 ski stations, Alpine and Nordic skiing, All within a short distance from the house.

Due to our rural location we recommend private transport and have plenty of parking spaces available onsite.

We are in a very RURAL village and our nearest restaurants are about 10 minutes drive.

Generally, they start serving at 19h and their last service is around 20:30. (except pizza takeaway that will close around 22h)

Please take this into account when arriving to allow enough time to find a restaurant.

We also have the barn kitchen at your disposal if you want to eat on the premises. IN WINTER:: Very important to let us know in the MORNING, so we can make sure the wood heater (stove) is started in plenty of time. For those wanting to use the barn heating in the winter a 10euro/night heating supplement, to contribute to the cost of wood is asked for.

We can also offer to eat with us a vegan meal and 100% organic
Menu 15 euros (starter + main course OR main + dessert with coffee)
Menu 22 euros (starter, main course, dessert, coffee)
This choice may depend on other guests staying, because we eat all the same meal together: this must be reserved in advance.
