Catalan cuisine is characterised by the existence of a wide variety of produce which makes it a cooking-style standing apart from the rest.
Its identity rests on the use of contrasting flavours: sweet/savourysweet/sourand on specific culinary techniques such as sofregit and picada. The Pyrenées-Orientales is the land of 2 rugby... (s) ; it is said that the Catalans have a heart "as big as that!". This heart is oval and its beat has a tendency to speed up when. the rugby season starts! Over and above the sporting aspect, rugby is today a veritable social phenomenon in this area... whether it is to cheer on their clubs, which are USAP (XV) and the Catalan Dragons (XIII) , a veritable sea of blood and gold flags ripple around the stands at each match.
The Pyrenées-Orientales has a rich and diverse past; numerous sites and museums trace the history of this land, from the oldest European discovery of ancestral bones at Tautavel, the Romanesque art which is so present in Perpignan and throughout the numerous traditional villages of the area, the Cathare castles, the fortifications of Vauban which are listed as UNESCO world heritage... the list is endless

Directions

Once in the village of Argeles, turn right at the traffic lights (there are only one set of traffic lights in Argeles village). This is the direction towards the train station, la gare, or Sorède. You go straight on, over a small roundabout thing in the road (the gare will now be off to your left) and under the railway bridge. You have the cemetry to your left. You need to drive along side the cemetry, keeping it on your lefthand side. This is the route notre dame de Vie and we are on this road about 2kms away.
At the next cross roads you need to turn right, go under the fast road, turn second left, and follow the signposts to Hermitage notre Dame de Vie, ou the Ferme du Bonheur all the way. Our house is on your right, after the ferme du bonheur, and just before a lovely stone wall and very pretty house. There is a sign saying Mas Lamon, Gites de France - you can't see the house from the road but go down the track on your right and the house is infront of you.
