Algajola, situated along the coast between the Ile Rousse and Calvi, is an ancient Genoese fortress built
on the site of a Roman town. Pillaged by Barbary pirates in June 1643, during the following years, it raised particularly impressive fortifications on the seaward front. Algajola was at that time the second Genoese port of Corsica. From this historical past there remains the Bastion with its vaulted passageway ("E Porte"), the Bastion San Giorgio, the old houses clustered inside the ramparts and the castle ("U Castellu") whose massive walls plunge into the sea.
